THE SEA-GREEN, SUN-GOLD STRAW

You are warmly invited to a cosy and contemplative gathering led by Edda Kristín Sigurjónsdóttir, where grasses and straw take centre stage. Light refreshments and herbal tea will be served. Everyone is welcome.
Edda is fascinated by the magical world of plants and draws inspiration from her surroundings and the people she meets. She has worked in the arts and cultural sector for many years and has also studied horticulture, with a focus on organic growing. She works as a journalist for Bændablaðið and runs the cultural media platform Edda og Greipur mæla með.
“Straw consists of the flower-bearing stems of grasses and sedges.
Wandering, resilient, unassuming, generous and beautiful, yet often given little attention. ‘We live like swaying, swaying grass,’ says the Icelandic national anthem. For a little while, we will look at the world from the perspective of grasses. We will talk about them, how they are described, look at them, draw them, perhaps eat them and sing about them — though not the national anthem.
Blue lyme grass, woodrush, silky barley, timothy, lyme grass, barley, tufted hair-grass and all their many other names, with two-flowered spikelets, densely woolly inflorescences, short awns, five-veined leaves and purple anthers.
We will turn our attention to this great family of plants that grasses belong to. We will ponder those that grow close to us: grasses between paving stones, in gardens, throughout the city, in fields, abroad, and those that find way to the mouth of mice and men. Let us meet and, together, perhaps sharpen our senses just a little.”
