Thursday 24 September, 1pm at Bunker Distillery Cellar Door & Bar. Three unhurried hours, a palette knife instead of a brush, and one canvas you can actually run your hand across.

You are building Summertime Australia. Turquoise water breaking into thick cream whitewater, dragged out over warm sand with a beach umbrella dropped in for good measure. The wave is where all the paste goes, so the raised part is the hero of the painting rather than a detail in the corner.

Fair warning, this is not one of our singalong nights. No live vocalist, no shouting the chorus, no hairbrush moment. The playlist sits under the room, the volume stays civilised, and the focus is the knife in your hand.

No experience needed, and textured art is kinder to beginners than it looks. A knife edge is meant to be irregular, so the wobble that would show in a fine brush line just reads as texture.

One tip, bring something flat to carry the canvas home in the car. Raised paint stays soft for a while and does not like anything resting against it.
